About Melghat
Melghat literally means a meeting place of Ghats. It consists of succession of hills and valleys with constant and or abrupt variations in altitude, the difference in elevation is as much as 600 m. it is the northwestern compact block of forest in Amravati district and is bordered by the Tapti river and has a dry deciduous to semi evergreen type of forest, where teak is the predominant species. The annual rainfall varies from place to place within a short distance with change in altitude. The rainfall in the area varies from 75-to 250 mm. The vegetation varies considerably with the change in altitude, aspect and rainfall. The predominant tribe is the Korku and their occupations is mainly farming and honey hunting. These tribes are undertaking the collection of honey from the wild honey bees in the traditional style and selling their produce in the weekly markets.
